How long supplier qualification actually takes

Why domestic source qualification stretches weeks into months, which steps run in parallel, and what shortens the path without skipping evidence.

Qualification time is rarely one task with a single owner. It is evidence collection, technical review, sample builds, inspection, customer approval, and sometimes tooling, often run in parallel by people who do not share one system of record. Calendar time stretches because handoffs are invisible and gaps reopen after someone assumes a step finished.

A typical domestic source qualification path includes several layers. First, process fit: does the supplier’s equipment class, material experience, and tolerance band match the part requirement? Second, evidence review: certs, special-process approvals, prior similar work, and inspection method. Third, sample or first-article work tied to the drawing revision in effect. Fourth, customer or program gates that may require PPAP, source approval, or audit scope beyond what the supplier expected.

Each layer can stall independently. Quality may be waiting on a cert translation while sourcing assumes FAI is underway. Engineering may approve process capability before finishing evidence confirms the right NDT method. Without explicit approval state on each requirement, teams lose days rediscovering what was already verified on a prior program.

Parallel work helps only when dependencies are named. Sample builds should not start before material and special-process evidence is scoped. Customer gates should be listed before the supplier invests in tooling. Structured packets that show complete, partial, and missing proof let reviewers focus on gaps instead of rebuilding the file from email threads.

Structured packets, explicit gaps, and visible qualification gates compress calendar time because they remove rediscovery, not because they skip quality. The shops that qualify faster usually had clearer inputs up front: drawing package, inspection plan, cert requirements, and the approval path the customer expects. Domestic supplier discovery is faster when qualification work is modeled as a route with states, not as a sequence of ad hoc requests.
